Top 10 Vegetarian Eats in Austin 2017

As you know, Austin is a food lover’s heaven.  Restaurants pop up every single day and it’s hard to keep up!  Luckily, in a town that loves bbq and beer, there are still plenty of options for healthy and vegetarian food.

It was very difficult, but I did my best to narrow down to this year’s Top 10 Vegetarian eats in Austin, as a part of the Austin City Guide’s ATX Best Eats.  There are a few Austin vegetarian staples that stayed on list, however, there are few newbs in town that you need to check out!

Top 10 Vegetarian Eats in Austin 2017

1.True Food Kitchen

  • 222 West Avenue, Suite HR 100, Austin, Texas 78701
  • Why?:  I’ve been a TFK fan for awhile and I was so pumped they opened in Austin.  Their slogan is, “Honest food that tastes really good”.  End of story.  Real food, creative dishes, and fresh pressed juice and cocktails.
  • What to get:  Shittake Tofu Lettuce Cups, Farmers Market Crudites, and a Teriyaki Quinoa Bowl w/ tofu

2. Flower Child

  • 11721 Rock Rose Avenue, Austin, Texas 78758
  • Why?:  They have a variety of nutrient packed bowls and salads that you can top with Organic tofu. Plus, they have some small plates that you can mix n match together for a meal.  The veg small plates have blown my mind away.
  • What to get: Mix n match the Spicy Japanese Eggplant + Indian Spiced Cauliflower.  Or get the “Forbidden” Rice bowl, or the Late Riser bowl.

3. Citizen Eatery

  • 5011 Burnet Rd., Austin, TX 78756
  • Why?:  This place is 100% meat free, and still offers paleo and gluten-free options.  The space is open, well lit and has breakfast all day!
  • What to get: The Nest or the Paleo Burger.  And don’t forget an order of yuca fries!

4. The Steeping Room

  • (Multiple Locations) 11410 Century Oaks Terrace Suite 112, Austin, TX 78758
  • Why?:  The Steeping Room is one of my favorite places for lunch.  They offer flavorful sandwiches, salads and bowls that leave you satisfied and full, but not sluggish or overstuffed.
  • What to get:  The daily Bangkok Bowl or Masala Bowl

5. VERTS Mediterranean Grill

  • (multiple locations)
  • Why?:  VERTS is my go-to when I need to pick up a quick, healthy lunch.  They completely dominate the falafel and sauce game.  Their falafels are piping hot and you can dip them in a variety of amazing sauces like hummus, tzatziki, spicy cilantro, hot Harissa, and more!
  • What to get:  Build your own pita or quinoa salad bowl and top with your favorite veggies, hummus, tzatziki, eggplant dip and falafel.

6. Blue Dahlia

  • 115 E. 11th Street Austin, TX 78702
  • Why?:  Think quaint atmosphere, large delicious salads, and a vegan pesto that is to die for.  It continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in Austin, ever since I moved here!
  • What to get: Black Bean Salad-  w/avocados, tomatoes, cilantro, lime, mango, corn, bell pepper and a cumin vinaigrette.  Add vegan pesto on the side.

7.  The Mediterranean Chef Cafe

  • 5908 Aurora Dr., Austin, TX 78757
  • Why?  Think creator of Austin’s famous Grandma’s Humus (if you are familiar, get familiar asap.), local, and the freshest of fresh tzatziki, hummus, falafel, and more.
  • What to get? Falafel Wrap- Falafel freshly fried, layered with Grandma’s humus, fresh tabouleh salad, and in-house tahini sauce, wrapped in a pita.  And mine as well throw in the baklava!

8. Koriente

  • 621 E 7th St., Austin, TX, 78701
  • Why?  Think healthy, delicious Asian food, $8-$10/entree, large portions, quick service, cheap beer, free miso soup, veggie filled bowls, and plenty of tofu.  You can also substitute white rice for brown rice or sweet potato noodles (or half rice/half noodles)!
  • What to get: Obake Bowl A or B or Shittake Tofu bowl

9. Bouldin Creek Cafe

  • 1900 S 1st St, Austin, TX 78704
  • Why?  Think hipster Austin, laid back, great atmosphere, great veg food, creative drinks.
  • What to get: Fajitas Italianas — Roasted portobellos sautéed with zucchini, onion and garlic.  Served with chopped local tomatoes, green leaf lettuce, chipotle pecan pesto, warm tortillas and salsa.  With a side of vegan cornbread.

10. Whole Foods Market

  • 525 N. Lamar Blvd, Austin TX 78703
  • Why?  Well, because it’s Whole Foods.  It’s the one below the corporate office which means taco station, sushi bar, make-your-own bowl bar, trattoria, and more– all with great vegetarian options.  Also, the salad bar and hot bar will blow your mind.
  • What to get:  Vegan Chorizo taco at the Taco Alley.  Load it up w/quinoa, grilled veggies, kale, black beans, potatoes, and/or queso.  + whole wheat tortilla.
