[Alphabet Soup] C is for El Chile

A few weeks ago, we continued on our ABC’s for Alphabet Soup

at El Chile Cafe y Cantina!El Chile Cafe Y Cantina

It was a tough choice between El Chile, Clark’s Oyster Bar and Chubby Hug Happy Fun Noodle Time.  Yes, there actually is (was) an eatery with that name. We think it’s closed, hmm, wonder why.  Either way, I found this charming restaurant name worth sharing.  Clarks? Ahh.. you are still on my ‘to eat’ list.

At least I can cross off El Chile.  We decided to go during happy hour because their happy hour specials are pretty darn good.  From 3-6pm, you can get 1/2 off select appetizers, $3 Pacificos, $4 sangrias and $5 margs.  I’m in.

We sat down to chips and their salsa, which apparently won first place in the Austin Chronicle’s Hot Sauce Contest.  That salsa was pretty darn good– well deserved title.  We got the Nachos Especiales (with chicken) which were your standard nachos with beans, jalapenos, pico and guac.  It wasn’t anything too special, but we ate them all.  Plus, they are $5.5 at happy hour and you can’t beat that.Nachos Especiales El Chile Cafe Y Cantina happy hour

We also got the guacamole which was delicious.  But then again, when do we NOT enjoy guac?  The chips that come with the guac are much better than the initial chips on the table.  So if you are looking for thicker and fresher (and therefore more oily, but we’ll disregard that)… get the guac.  It’s only $5 on happy hour.

The Queso Flameado was Mr. Popular at the table.  I refrained due to my cheese intolerance, but based on the hand-reaching, fast eating and magically disappearing cheese, I can confidently say that it is delicious.

It sure looked creamy, cheesy and oh-so oozy in that sizzling pan.  The queso comes with fresh tortillas allowing my friends to make their own quesadilla-like bites.

Of course, we enjoyed our share of sangrias and margaritas and wow… those things are pretty potent.  I got tried both the sangria and marg, and I liked the margarita the best.  It was strong, limey and not too sweet… just the way I like them.

If I were you, I would take an afternoon to enjoy this happy hour for yourself.  The place is absolutely adorable and has a fun Tex-mex feel.  I love the turquoise accents, large windows and spacious outdoor patio.  There was a lively buzz throughout the restaurant, making it perfect for groups of friends and family.  Grab some margaritas, nachos, cheese and guac and perch on their outdoor patio.

Thanks for having us El Chile.  We’ll be back again soon for dinner!
