I got the privilege to attend a cocktail class by Anthony Lehman, the bar manager at Prelog’s European Kitchen and Bar. Anthony educated us on three cocktails and taught us how to put our own home bar together. It was so much fun and I learned a lot!
For the month of June, Prelog’s ‘through-the-ages’ handcrafted cocktails are from the 1900-1910. This was right before prohibition, and after having these drinks, I knew why!
We learned all about the Sidecar, Sazerac and Daiquiri. With each cocktail, we also got delicious snacks from Chef Florian.
I couldn’t get over how kind and helpful Anthony was! I don’t know much about liquor, so I asked him all sorts of questions. (Probably very dumb questions!) He answered all my questions with so much patience and without a trace of pretentiousness. He showed us diagrams to explain the history of whiskey, let us explore the different types of bitters, and so much more. Thanks Anthony!
First, we started off with Sidecars, which were deliciously refreshing and citrus-y!
Next up, was the Sazerac.
Woo! This drink was strooooong! It was good, just a bit strong for my 5′ tall self. My boyfriend gladly drank the rest of my glass. If I had drank it all, I would have been toast :)
Last was the Daiquiri!
When I asked Anthony the necessary items for a home bar, he told me to get:
- One of each spirit (vodka, gin, tequila, rum, whiskey, brandy, etc.)
- Vermouth: one dry (for drinks like martinis), one sweet (for drinks like manhattans)
- Bitters: Angostura and Orange bitters
- Liqueur: Aperol and Chartreuse
- Simple syrup (and use brown sugar!)
- Fever Tree Ginger Ale
- Make your own grenadine and shrubs
I don’t think I can make drinks as good as Anthony, but I love the idea of trying!
Anthony holds classes every Saturday starting at 4:30pm at Prelog’s. For only $30, you get three cocktails, bites, and a take home glass. Also, through the rest of June, you can enjoy these featured cocktails at happy hour price, at any time!
If you want to learn more about cocktails, or just enjoy craft cocktails with some delicious bites, stop by Prelog’s on Saturday. You will love it!
